Part 2: List and describe 5 contributions to film that this classic period of film noir gave to cinema. Are any of these in "Touch of Evil?" If so...describe which ones....
1) Suspense - Suspense is pretty big in film noirs. There are countless times where you will be watching a film noir wondering wha is going to happen next. Many horror movies, after this generation, have learned from this and is used to a massive extent. There is a little suspense in Touch Of Evil.
2) Complexity - Many film noirs are quite complex. This can range from the actors, and trying to find out their personalities, the setting, and the most complex, the plot. The plot(s) in film noirs are a force to be reckoned with. Lots of film noirs with have you thinking throughout the entire movie just trying to find out what's going on. Although, sometimes, that's what makes a movie good. Many modern films today have taken some of these aspects, the plot may be confusing but it makes the movie that much better. A great example is Inception with Leonardo DiCaprio. Touch of Evil is quite a complex movie. Many of the characters are tough to analyze, with the exception of a few.
3) Plot - The plot in Touch Of Evil is quite complicated and a little hard to follow. Many film noirs are praised for there brilliant plots and many movies after the film noir generation learned just how good an incredible plot can be to a movie.
4) Violence - Now, many movies before the era of film noir did not have a great deal of violence in them. Many of the movies were mainly G rated, or whatever the equivalent to a G rating was back then, and they were mainly happy movies. The closest thing to violence in movies was if the movie was an early action or sci-fi film/TV show. The only exceptions are horror movies which obviously had some violence in them. Film noirs have an interesting way of pulling off violence. Sometimes the violence is quite blatant, but other times they show or imply (my favorite) the violence in such a way that it is pretty darn good. Many movies have taken this violence aspect and put them in movies. Touch Of Evil has some violence in it. Some good brawls.
5) Main Character(s) - Now, in my own opinion, I think characters are the most important aspect of the movie, next to the story/plot. There are many important aspects to film I could talk about, but that's besides the point. We know that the protagonist doesn't always have to be the good guy and same thing with the antagonist, he/she don't always have to be the bad guy. In many cases in films before this era, the characters were the same. The protagonist was the good guy and the antagonist was the bad guy. Pretty straight forward and almost predictable. There are many ways film noir uses the jumbled roles of characters to a pretty good advantage. Movies after this era have used these techniques and it really does make the movie much more interesting. In Touch Of Evil, they don't do this that much.
