Bullitt - 1968 - Peter Yates
Bullitt Movie Question
Answer the following in an essay of at least 150 words in length and using specific examples from the movie to support your answer.
Q#1) This movie has been called one of the greatest police dramas of all time. Do you agree/disagree? Explain your answer.
A: I think this movie is one of the best police dramas of all time, for some good reasons of course. I like throughout the movie how they utilize the art of silence. There are many scenes or parts in the movie where there is very little to no dialogue, just actions from different characters and objects. This method is quite good, because, honestly not many people like lengthy movies with a ton of dialogue. There are many actions that are very key when silent type scenes occur. Many of the actions give us insight of could happen next and even foreshadow things. I also like the amount of violence they allowed. There is alot of action and plenty of fights and such. In one scene we see Bullitt being chased and there is car smashing, shotguns and most importantly... explosions!!! When the people chasing Bullitt get blown up, it is quite cool. The raw action combined with just the right amount of dialogue, it makes a great movie. Lastly, I like the characters, many of them are quite easy to read but they are also well rounded characters. Only a few characters are quite static and do not contribute much.
Q#2) The car chase scene is considered to be one of the best in movie history. Do you agree/disagree? Explain your answer.
A: I think the car chase scene is the best car chase scene in movie history. I really like the chase mainly because it has a lot of action in the scene and it has explosions and very cool cars. But the most important thing that makes this scene the best in movie history is the lack of dialogue. Sometimes lack of dialogue is ok. But the whole scene literally has no dialogue. Just raw action... and explosions. The scene really relies on the actions and movement of everything and anything. For example, when the cop realizes that Bullitt is behind him, he doesn't say directly that Bullitt is behind him, the camera just focuses on the rear view mirror and we see that Bullitt is behind the cops. This helped us learn what is going on in that [articular scene. So, as you can see, you can do alot with actions. As they say, actions speak louder than words.
