Dead Poets Society - 1989 - Peter Weir
Assignment #1:
Q#1) Read the following quote by Professor John Keating from the movie Dead Poets Society. What do you think it means? Why?
"We don’t read and write poetry because it’s cute. We read and write poetry because we are members of the human race. And the human race is filled with passion. And medicine, law, business, engineering, these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for.”
A: I think the quote means that humans go for noble pursuits such as a doctor, a lawyer but, as Keating said, beauty romance and love are what we stay alive for because aside from our everyday lives, as boring as they may be, we have to let loose and have some fun. You should always stay true to tour field of work and pursue it, but if you do not have some fun in your life, then your life is going to be boring. You need to balance work and time for some fun.
Assignment #2:
Q#2) Read the following quote by Professor John Keating from the movie Dead Poets Society. What do you think it means? Explain.
"I stand upon my desk to remind myself that we must constantly look at things a different way. The world looks very different up here . . . Just when you think you think you know something you have to look at it in another way . . . When you read, don’t just consider what the author thinks, you must consider what you think."
A: This quote is quite simple, you should always look at things in a different way, whether you are looking at it through your opinion or someone else's. If you always look at things your way in life, or even someone else's, you won't get that far. In your life, you are constantly having to look at something in a different way other than your own or even vice versa. If you don't look at things a different way, you will be missing out on a lot things, such as ideas, opinions and more. When you do look at things in a different way, you will see and understand so many new things. This definitely goes for literature and novels. It is hard to decipher some things in a novel, such as theme for example. If you look at the theme in your way and the author's way, you will get a much better understanding of it rather that just looking at it from the author's eyes or yours.
